On 17 May 2025 in the early afternoon hours a freight train derailed in a curve between Hegyeshalom and Rajka/Rusovce border, on the network of GYSEV. The derailed train contained a special equipment with heavy items; it was carried a transformator carriage which derailed with four axles and damaged the infrastructure more than 130 meters long.
Update of 21-05-2025:
After the accident the line section is in operation on the tracks with 10km/h speed restrictions on a 200 m long section.
———————————————————————————————————————————————————-
Since the accident occured in a single track line section, traffic is not possible till the mitigation measures and reconstruction works will be completed. This will take several days due to the special circumstances (the weight of derailed wagon is approximately 560 tons).
The re-opening of the line section is expected on 21 May. In the following days, shorter track closures might still be needed, they will be carried out during the night hours until the full restoration.
The infrastructure manager has identified the alternative routes the west towards Nickelsdorf and the east towards Komárom/Komárno as possible diversions for freight trains.
Passenger trains are replaced by replacement buses between Hegyeshalom and Rajka.
GYSEV informed immediately the MÁV traffic control center and the RUs via various channels (incl. incident management tool) about the incident. MÁV has also informed the public and the affected infrastructure managers about the event on its website and through the press.
ÖBB infra informed the participants in the 1st telco about the rerouting lines in Austria and offered an additional line capacity via Břeclav – Vienna and Bratislava-Petržalka – Vienna towards Hungary.
